Experience in Implementing The Project – Homade Pi (Home Observer and Security)

All of scholars from Indonesia and SOI students at Republic Polytechnic went to Evergreen where elderly live. We were given a problem and we have to find out the solution with our technology Raspberry Pi. As I told at my old posting when we visited Evergreen, we found many problems. And we have to discussed in our team about what technology we needed to use. Finally we decided to make a system that has two function observer and security system called Homade Pi. And the result will be reported or sent to the officer.

At Monday October, 12nd 2015 we went to IDA Labs where we can see many interesting projects from any technology such as electronics, robotics, 3D printing, etc. We supposed to get ideas and as reference place to help us list down the components that we need to build our project. Then we estimated the price of each components, every teams will be given SGD 100. Furthermore, we went to Sim Lim Tower (Electronics Shop) to buy components.

The next day, Tuesday till Thursday we have to build our project. These are things that we needed and bought, but some of them has been provided by campus.

  • Raspberry Pi as a mini computer
  • Grove Pi as a bridge to connect Raspberry pi and Grove Sensors
  • Ultrasonic Sensor to detect any suspicious movement in front of the door
  • Gas Sensor to detect gas leak
  • Light Sensor to turn on/off lamp automatically based on intensity of sun light
  • Buzzer as an alarm
  • LED as simulator to substitute lamp
  • Wires to connect two or more components to raspberry pi pins.
  • Bread Board to make circuit
  • Resistors
  • Pi Camera to capture any suspicious movement
  • Wifi Dongle to connect internet

First day, we did installation OS Raspbian Wheezy and some Raspberry Pi’s configurations. And we also tried to make a circuit for the sensors and LED on bread board but we failed make sensor’s circuit. So in the second day we bought Grove Pi to make it easy without stringing wires on bread board. Then we just have to plug and play the sensor on grove pi, but before it we have to install library of each sensors and grove pi. For LED we needed to make simple circuit. In the Third Day we configured email and made the graph for display the record of the result as report.

I got so many experiences of making this project. I learned what is PBL (Problem Based Learning) and the way to solve the problem. How to communicate with user, actually it’s so hard to make other people understand our purpose. Some of them didn’t need any system to help their life, whereas I am sure everybody need technology for their life, they just don’t have enough knowledge to know it. So this is our challenge. And also we learned something new everyday together and built the projects together. And we have done the presentation well.

Pi Light Up Developing by Timm1Team

After at the 2nd day  we visit Evergreen for observing and sharing some story with elderly we finally do a thing that can help elderly with their problem.

TIMM1 TEAM
            TIMM1 TEAM

My team (Timm1Team) is making Pi Light Up which is emergency lamp and house monitoring system using motion sensor and voice command. Why we build this? Because when we talking with the elderly she told us that she some time forgot to turn on the lamp when she go to the toilet in the middle of the night and make she cant sleep well. And also there’s a big issue that the staff ever find elderly that already passed away in her room and no one realize that for a week. We think that the best way how to solve that problem is using cctv to monitor the elderly, but the elderly having a privacy issue and don’t want to use any technology.

                     Let’s build the house

So we get the conclusion using motion and voice command to make the elderly save and can help the staff to take care the elderly without operating any technology.

Will be miss this moment :"
                       Project perfectly done

What i learn while developing this project is how we can think how to give the best solution we have to every problem that given to us. And also how to work together as a team, share some ideas, share knowledge, share experiences.

1st Weekend outing – Marina Barrage

I cant wait this day because of today is where I will be in the most beautiful place in Singapore, Central City, and The Icon Merlion. First we arrived at Marina Barrage, the Marina Barrage is one of the reservoirs in Singapore. The guide briefed us and told about the roles of Marina Barrage. It plays an important parts in helping to alleviate flooding in some of the lower lying areas of the island. As we know Singapore is too hard in providing fresh water because of the geographic location surrounded by sea. So the place is also important in providing fresh water.

At 1st floor there were galleries of water forming process. How The Marina Barrage works, why that is important to them and why did they made it. Sure they used sophisticated technology to turned sea water into fresh water. They created that place in case of Singapore often flooded at the past. So they thought about how to make something to prevent flood.

I learned the way they are thinking, so it may be able to apply in my country in Jakarta because of there is too often flood.

Marina Barrage itself have created some much needed recreational space. It’s a popular place to run, bike, sail boats, and take wedding photos. At the top of Marina Barrage we can see almost the central city of Singapore, especially the popular place such as Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Flyer, Flower Dome, etc. We did some group photos in there. We were so delighted to be there and see the popular places in Singapore at the same time at top of buildings.

Raspberry Pi (Oh…yay.)

Hey-hey-ho~

Enough with the playing-around-somewhere stuff. Things getting serious after we went to IDA and Sim Lim Tower to buy materials for our project. We looked around, looked around, looking for stuff we can use to develop our project using Raspberry Pi.

In addition, three days after October 12th was TIRING. We have to develop our project in those three (almost) sleepless days. Seriously.

Of course that efforts mean something. I learned how should teamwork will be. If a part or more doesn’t want to listen to others, that is not teamwork. Something may be done, but it won’t make each members happy or it won’t be as good as if the real teamwork runs.

IMG-20151016-WA0012

Of course not only technical knowledge I got from those (almost) sleepless nights, but also this. If you want to earn something, you have to go through hardship and make efforts to be released from that hardship. I mean, look at this after our presentation.

A Week of Fun!

Hey-hey-ho~

So I’m here again to write about my first week in Singapore, which is started from October 5th to October 11th. A week of fun, I have to say. After what I wrote in my post before, at October 8th, we gathered as respective team to do Raspberry Pi project. We were brainstorming, actually, about what is the problem(s) we found the day before in Evergreen and from that problem, we decide what system to make.

After that, in the evening, friends from RP took us to the Woodlands Waterfront Park. It’s beautiful to see sunset from there.

IMG_20151008_182333

So yeah, my other adventure was in October 10th to Marina Barrage. I learned a lot of how is the system here in Singapore to produce fresh water. From what I heard, it’s pretty hard and thus I know why Singaporeans are very aware of water usage and promote to use water effectively.

IMG_20151010_112325

IMG_20151010_111928

And from there, they took us around (a very, very long walk, phew!) and our final destination for the day was the Merlion Statue which is a landmark for Singaporean. I must say that almost everything is useless when you do it alone, right. So that’s why human need others to live. So do I. Without friends, It must be boring to do even the most FUN stuff.

IMG_20151010_170220_1

And the next day, we went to Universal Studios Singapore. What’s the purpose? Of course to HAVE FUN!

IMG_20151011_102105
I don’t know who’s the lady beside me. Let’s just pretend I’m alone here, OK? >.<

So after a week, I think what I learnt is to have a clean, and healthy life. It can be started from ourselves, like to not throwing rubbish away at any place. If we start from each of us (no need to ask others to do so), all people will do the same good thing (like what they do here in Singapore). Oh, and also to use water properly.

The Beginning of TF Scale 2

The first thing i think about TF SCALE is this program are all about serving community and having a good leadership skill. The reason why im joining this program because i want to be person that people can count on to make this world to be a better place.

So this is the first time i arrived in Singapore, the first place i visit in Singapore is of course Chang I airport. That airport is a big place an also well design. I also see a lot of people from different race around the airport as i heard that Singapore is where diversity of race won’t be a problem.

In Chang I airport is also the place where the first time i met TF SCALE crew which is the teacher and student from Republic Polytechnic. They are welcoming us really nice, they also give us a short tour in Chang I airport. And we also take a selfie which already known that it can “break the ice” easily.

1After that we’re all going to Campus Heights in RP which is the place we will stay for 3 weeks.

The First Day of TF SCALE.

We have our very first breakfast on Republic Polytechnic canteen before we go to opening ceremony. At the first day we met our other Indonesian friend from Riau and Cambodian, Myanmar and we also got 3 new shirt. We take a tour all around campus that lead by students from RP, so we’ll know how is Republic Polytechnic. We also have a class that we can share what is our motivation joining TF SCALE and then some of us share it in Lecturer Theater.

Day Two Of TF SCALE

We’re going to Evergreen which is the place where we’re gonna do our observation and share some stories with elderly who live there. After that we’re going to Bollywood Veggie which is the place we see many kind of plants which mostly we also can find in Indonesia. We have a lot of fun this day by listen to stories that elderly told us and we can learn and play in Bollywood Veggie as well.

To Find Solutions

Hey-Hey-hoo~

October 7th is my third day in Singapore. Comfortable, but kind of hard to go outside because of the heat, though. As you see, in Malang our average temperature is 25 degrees Celcius, and I bet it’s higher than that here.

Hmm, our second day…at 8 in the morning we assembled at South Canteen to have breakfast. Not all of us, actually as some of us already have breakfast in our hostel. At about nine we were departed by bus to Evergreen. Evergreen is a place where elderly lives after their retirement here in Singapore. Our intentions visiting there is basically to know how is their daily life there, hearing their story, and thus, understanding which problem of theirs could be helped with the technology we’ll be developed.

They are all very nice, especially one elderly we were talking to. She wants us to call her LK. She is 76 years old, but was still full of energy. She even made jokes to break the gap between us.

And after a bit chit-chat with her, we know that one of their problem is the red-emergency ropes installed inside their room. It supposedly to be pulled every time they need help for emergency situation, such as when they’re falling down, or suddenly unable to move.

This rope installed not in one place. But, Auntie LK told us that one day, she fell down rather far from this rope. Oh, she has problem with her feet, by the way. So, at that time she was unable to move and have to crawl all the way to reach nearest emergency ropes.

Anyway, this is the picture we took with her.

After lunch and afternoon prayer we departed by bus from Evergreen to Bollywood Veggies. It is basically a place to conserve plants. Many kind of plants are planted. Some of them, we already saw them in Indonesia, so the fun part is knowing what is that plant called here. But some of them, we never saw in the first place so yeah, it’s fun also.

We were having fun!
We were having fun!

And lastly, we were also doing nuts-fun thing, like this.

That day was fun, fun, fun! Tireness was just acknowledged when we were back to our hostel. Phew!

Experience in Implementing The Project (Dream5team)

In the second week of TF SCALE II, we identify the problems which have been obtained after we visiting Evergreen.  Based on the interviews we did to the elderly there, we found some problems that can be solved by using the technology in its implementation. We were divided into groups to work on the project. I was in a group of 5 with members  of 7 people, 3 people of PNM, 1 of PCR, 1 of PKM, and 2 from RP.

mmkkjkj
Members of my team . DREAM5 TEAM 🙂

We make a project titled E-SmartLight. E means the emergency, which in our system there is a tool in the form of remote emergency that could bring by the elderly. SmartLight means that in the system that we make, can turn on and turn off the lights automatically just by passing through the door. When parents entered the house, a sensor that we put on the side door of the house will be read and will automatically turn on the lights. If the parents go out of the house, the lights and the water in the house will turn off automatically. We use an infrared sensor. We use the IR transmitter and IR receiver put on the door of the house. Sensors connected to Raspi and then Raspi be will generate the program which we describe our system.

In the making of this project, the budget that we needed to create a simulation of our system is very affordable, less than 100 dollars to the cost of purchasing the equipment and sensors needed. We make the project within 3 days and on the fourth day we present it.

In our group, we are working hard on the project finally be completed on time and we were able to present it well. Equipment like raspberry pi and some other expensive equipment have been provided by the RP so we have no difficulty in working on our project. Many things I learned in this project is how to work in teams and how to make a work based on the real problems that exist and can solve the problems experienced by other people.
